Starting the journey of self isolation and homeschooling
Today brings with it the first day of a new, strange chapter in all of our lives in the UK. Many of you will be waking up this morning to the start of your home-schooling journey with your children. Others, who are key workers, will be heading off to their potentially busier than usual jobs. Dropping your children off at school, which will also be a new and different environment. Mixed classes and far fewer children. No National Curriculum and no uniform.
I will be working the morning shift for the KS2 class at my school, along with another two members of staff. It’s going to be really different and surreal for us all. But it doesn’t have to be difficult or scary. For those at home, there is no pressure to be up by a certain time if that doesn’t work best for you. You can schedule your day around the needs of your family.
Why not use this opportunity to tap into something your child is really into right now? If there is a topic they’re mad about, why not use it for their learning!
- Bake together – learning to read scales is a vital maths skill but you get to do something fun. AND… you have something delicious to eat at the end of it!
- Start a craft project which involves planning, measuring and a range of other skills.
- Write stories and poems.
- Write letters to others or letter to their future self.
- Start a journal to log their experience during this historical moment in time – MAKE a journal!
- Play word games like Scrabble and Boggle.
- Make birdhouses or bird feeders and hang them outside where you can watch them from your window.
The list could go on. So many options of wonderful things to do with your children on this new journey but most important of all, have fun and treasure this time together. If you feel like sharing your first day of home schooling, we would love to hear what you got up to.
