A Summer of Fun!

September 14, 2018by Bobbie0

Summer holidays 2018 arrived along with the glorious sunshine, which only meant one thing…holiday club time! We managed to pack in a huge range of indoor and outdoor activities with some exciting guest workshops too.

Week one rolled by quickly with a visit from Little Zoo To You – the kids got up close and hands on with six little guests. They learnt lots of new fantastic facts about these gorgeous little creatures and inspired by the visit, they made their own pottery animals. We also tasted lots of fruit and teamed up to make fruit smoothie lollies which was a welcome relief in the summer heat! The pebble art was popular with most of the children painting several pebbles to take home with them and everyone worked together to design some delightful bunting to brighten up the clubhouse. The rest of the week included fingerprint painting, fabric design, marbling, slime-making, scratch art, a scavenger hunt, door plaques, Chas Jacobs-inspired canvas painting and finished with a visit from Archers of Dolphinholme with a fantastic afternoon of archery! What a busy first week!

In week two we started by planting runner beans, teamed up for a nature trail and using items we found, created some nature art. That followed on with treasure maps, clay leaves, baking bread and we looked at Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting, using it to interpret our own versions of it. The highlight of the week had to be our ‘Greatest Showman’ day, where our guests, Red Rose Stage Academy, played lots of dance-inspired team games and taught the children a dance routine to some music from the film. The kids had a giggle posing for fun photos with props in front of the circus backdrop and as we had a birthday that day, everyone got a go on the funfair game. We did some chalk and charcoal nature drawing, baked, iced and decorated cupcakes and drummed our way out of week two with a brilliant workshop from Phil Gibson of Music 2 Calm the Soul.

In the final week, we planted cress seeds, created some button canvas collages and enjoyed a visit from local illustrator, Hannah Robinson. Hannah delivered a storyboard workshop, which went down a treat! We built dens, painted ceramics and looked at Egyptian hieroglyphics, designing some fabulous papyrus bookmarks. The final day of creation included shrink-art keyrings, wooden coasters, stitching felt cushions and a real treasure hunt!

In the blink of an eye and several picnic lunches later, three weeks had passed and the children went home with decorated bags full of all their crafts, seedlings and goodies – well they do say time flies when you’re having fun!
